It is located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, about 42 km/26 miles (a 40-minute drive) southwest of Tenerife port. Originally conceived as a parrot reserve (“Loro Parque” means “parrot park” in Spanish), Loro Park has developed into a 13.5-hectare (33 acres) facility that is home to over 400 animal species. Some of these species include dolphins, sea lions, gorillas, otters, red pandas, alligators, penguins, tigers, chimpanzees, sloths, and many more. However, don’t be disappointed if it’s canceled last minute for safety reasons, due to the strong winds. No, the boats are not wheelchair accessible nor handicap approved by the coastguard. Wheelchairs and walkers can go as far as the stairs to the boat, but are not allowed on board for safety reasons. There are about 4 to 5 steps with handrails up to the boat and then a short distance to a seat.
